What is the Purpose of the Gallbladder?

The gallbladder is a small sac-shaped organ beneath the liver. Its purpose is to store bile that has been filtered by the liver. The gallbladder then squeezes stored bile into the small intestines to help digest fats.

Gallbladder Disease

A series of illnesses can form when the gallbladder is unhealthy. Unfortunately because of the poor diets in our society, gallbladder related diseases are some of the most common. It is estimated that 20 to 25 million Americans have (or will have) gallstones. Cholecystectomy (surgical removal of the gallbladder) is now the most common elective abdominal surgery performed in the U.S., with over 750,000 operations being performed annually (US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health). Although it can be highly encouraged by health professionals to have this surgery, it never fixes the real problem. When the gallbladder is removed completely many people still struggle with the same digestive issues they did before, and more commonly they experience diarrhea and malnutrition because of the lack of bile getting into the intestines.

  1. Gallstones (cholelithiasis): Bile crystallizes in the gallbladder forming gallstones.

  2. Cholecystitis: Inflammation of the gallbladder.

  3. Gallbladder cancer: High amounts of toxicity in the gallbladder.

  4. Gallstone pancreatitis: Impacted gallstone blocks the ducts that drain the pancreas.

Symptoms of an Unhealthy Gallbladder:

  1. Pain in the abdomen and right side under rib cage

  2. Nausea

  3. Fever

  4. Constipation

  5. Diarrhea

  6. Indigestion

Food Effects the Gallbladder

The biggest reason that hundreds of thousands of people have had their gallbladders removed is because of poor diets. Eating bread, pasta, pizza, crackers, dairy, sweets, junk foods, and too much meat congests the organs eventually which leads to stones, buildup, sludge, bile, and blockages. It is always easier to eat right and prevent gallstones than try to reverse an already damaged gallbladder, but it is possible to heal your gallbladder.

10 Steps to Healing the Liver & Gallbladder

1. Avoid all fried foods, oily foods, and heavy fats. This means even avoiding or limiting the amount of healthy fat you consume such as animal fats, butter, nuts and seeds, nut butters and even coconut oil. Instead, use small portions of olives, olive oil, and avocado. These are healthy fats for the liver.

2. Avoid sugars and grains, especially processed sugars. Many gallbladders are diseased and full of infection. All sugars and starches feed infectious organisms. Think of how damaging alcohol is to the liver of those who have abused alcohol. Sugar and grains (complex carbohydrates) have the same effect on the body and damage the liver. If you are going to eat sugar in any form, make it fruit sugar in small portions.

3. Drink raw vegetable juices that help heal the liver like carrot juice which helps with bile flow. Other good vegetables for the liver include parsley, beet, lemon, and lots of greens.

4. Use liver and gallbladder healing herbs such as milk thistle, dandelion, burdock root, chaga, reishi, gold coin grass, chanca piedra, nettle, etc. Bitters are a combination of herbs that help stimulate the digestive response and secrete bile which makes it excellent for the liver and gallbladder. We recommend Swedish Bitters by Flora.

5. Drink apple cider vinegar and lemon all day with warm water. This breaks down gallstones, cholesterol and fatty deposits in the liver and gallbladder.

6. Keep the burden off the liver/gallbladder by eating light and smaller portions. For breakfast, keep it light with juice, smoothies or fruit only. It's better to eat your biggest meal at lunch and then eat a smaller meal for dinner like a salad.

7. Avoid eating anything after 7 pm ideally. Eating at night does not allow the liver to heal, cleanse and detox.

8. Remove parasites, mycotoxins, fungus, mold, yeast and candida. Doing a parasite cleanse before a gallbladder cleanse is wise. Many health practitioners have learned that infections block the liver and gallbladder and prevent them from healing. Try the Spirit of Health 21-Day Microbe Cleanse.

9. Cleanse! The Spirit of Health 30 Day Liver & Gallbladder Cleanse includes two liver/gallbladder flushes. To some, the flushes are controversial, but for those whose lives have been changed by it, they would tell you otherwise. A liver/gallbladder flush can remove old waste from the bile ducts and free up this organ to properly function once again.

10. If you are suffering and want to get out of pain, go on a JUICE FAST. Drink only fresh vegetable and fruit juices (mostly veggies ideally and one fruit for taste) for anywhere from 3 days minimum up to 40 days. It will get you out of pain and allow your liver the much-needed rest for healing.

Recipes to Relieve Gallbladder Pain or Attacks

1. Beet Treatment for Gallbladder Pain

Ingredients:

  • 1 large organic beet or beetroot (raw) washed and finely grated (If you cannot get organic beets, be sure to peel them. Otherwise, use the peel as well)

  • Juice of 1/2 lemon

  • 2 Tbsps flax oil (Flax oil is by far the superior choice here as it is an omega-3 essential fatty acid, but if you only have extra-virgin cold-pressed olive oil in the house, you can substitute it temporarily.)

  • Take one teaspoon of the mixture every hour throughout the day.

Directions:

  • On day two and three make a fresh batch using 1⁄4 of a large beet. Take one teaspoon of mixture 3 to 4 times a day or more.

  • Make this mixture and add it to your salads frequently or eat alone as above 2 or 3 times a week. This will keep the bile thin and moving.

  • Eat your regular meals throughout this period, striving to eat lots of fresh vegetables, healthy fats and to avoid refined sugars and processed foods.

2. Green Soup Recipe for Relief of Gallbladder Pain

The Green Soup is excellent for relief from gallbladder pain and also from gastric disturbances such as stomach pain, gas, and indigestion. I do not add any fat or salt to this recipe. It can be used anytime but is particularly useful as a three day fast with nothing else but water. It is both nourishing and easy to digest. You can alter the amounts to taste. NOTE: THIS SOUP IS NOT FOR A GALLBLADDER ATTACK! Liquids are best during an attack. Try the Flax Seed Tea instead.

Ingredients:

  • 1 bunch of parsley

  • 3 medium zucchini

  • 1⁄2 lb. Green beans (Adding more beans will increase the sweetness)

  • 5 stalks of celery

Directions:

Steam together for 8-10 minutes or partially steam and boil in 1⁄2 cup water. If you have a steamer, you retain more nutrients and flavor with that method. Puré in a blender.

3. Flax Seed Tea to Use During a Gallbladder Attack

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp of organic flax seeds

  • 2 1/2 cups of water

Directions:

Boil flax seeds in water for 5 minutes. Steep for 10 minutes. Strain and sip slowly.
